Blind Tasting

Sangiovese ~ 1 June 2021

Winners of tonight
No. 4: Castagna Un Segreto 2012
Region: Victoria, Australia
Grape: 70/30 blend of Beechworth sangiovese and syrah
Notes: Crimson to traditional blood magenta in colour; it has a refined aroma both mysterious and beguiling: plums, black pepper, leather polish. On the palate black cherries ripe and firm with sweet wafts of damp rose petals; a glorious attack of silky plum fruit with exotic spices and a fine tannin underbelly freshened by balanced acidity.

No. 6: Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia Felsina 2015
Region: Tuscany, Italy
Grape: Sangiovese
Notes: Ruby red appearance with rich, intense tones. Spicy nose with floral notes and hints of wild berry (red and black), accompanied by mineral impressions and light toasted notes. Spice re-appears on the palate, which displays firm but supple tannins, and the finale is vigorous and taut. Overall, the wine is compelling for its flavour-rich mid-palate and supporting acidity.

No. 3: Avignonesi Da Di Toscana Rosso 2019
Region: Tuscany, Italy
Grape: 100% Sangiovese
Notes: Vinified in 11 terracotta vessels made in Tuscany - 6 manufactured by Artenova in Impruneta, and 5 by Laboratorio San Rocco in Torrita di Siena using clay from Mount Amiata.  This wine is composed of one-third whole bunches and two-thirds whole berries.

No. 1: Castello Fonterutoli Gran Selezione Chianti Classico 2017
Region: Tuscany, Italy
Grape: Sangiovese
Notes: Lots of ripe fruit with walnuts, tile, dried berries and chocolate powder. Full-bodied, velvety and chewy. This is a very powerful and structured Chianti Classico that will rival many top Brunellos.

No. 2: Fattoria La Magia Brunello di Montalcino 2015
Region: Tuscany, Italy
Grape: 100% Sangiovese
Notes: Intense aromas of blackberries, mushrooms, forest floor and wet earth. Full body and round, chewy tannins. Powerful palate. Persistent finish. Very structured.
Alcohol content: 15%

No. 5: Fattoria La Magia Rosso di Montalcino 2018
Region: Tuscany, Italy
Grape: 100% Sangiovese
Notes: Floral and cherry nose with wild berry fruit flavours, papery tannins, lively acidity and real persistence on the finish. Definitely a baby Brunello style; very authentic and typical.
