「旅に病んで」の句を耳にした時、すぐに芭蕉の辞世句と思われる方も多いのではないだろうか。確かに死を前にした心境を素直に表現しているようで、辞世句としてふさわしく見える。ところがこの句には「病中吟」という前書がついている。

It’s not “withered fields”. Poor translation. Something much wilder. After everything has died and it’s all removed — the stubble, everything — the fields are totally empty, truly vast. On his deathbed, Basho embraced the whole impermanent field of the universe.

ぬべし：助動詞、推量の意を表す語とともに用いられて、その事態が確実に起こることを予想し強調する。「…にちがいない。きっと…だろう」の意味。

Shiki was an invalid with tuberculosis. At thirteen, when he coughed up blood for the first time, he took the pen name Shiki, which in Sino-Japanese is translated as “cuckoo”, the bird that, according to legend, coughs blood as it sings.
Basho trekked in the wilderness to receive his haiku; Shiki sat alert at the edge of the garden. At one point he wrote that “the little garden is my universe and its plants and flowers have become the sole material for my poems”.
