The best things in life are free, like the Perseid meteor shower active from mid-July through mid- to late August with maximum occurring on the morning of August 12th.
Periodic comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle grows a striking tail during its perihelion passage. Material sloughed from the comet at each return is the source of the meteoroids responsible for the annual Perseid meteor shower. When Earth crosses the comet’s orbital path every August, sand- and apple-seed-sized particles strike the atmosphere at more than 133,000 miles per hour (59 km/second) and produce bright meteor trails still called “shooting stars”.
Numbers are typically lower in the evening when the radiant is low in the northeastern sky because many downward-directed meteors are cut off by the horizon. Generally, the later you’re up the more meteors you’ll see. Earth’s night-time hemisphere turns into the direction of the planet’s orbital motion after midnight, which increases the number of hits, both from the shower and unrelated sporadic meteors.
2024年8月の星空情報です。
夏の大三角が頭上に輝く季節です。織女星と牽牛(けんぎゅう)星を探してみましょう。かつての暦の七月七日(伝統的七夕の日)は、2024年は8月10日にあたります。
10日の夕方、おとめ座の1等星「スピカ」の食が、広い範囲で見られます。月の暗い縁に星が隠れるため「潜入」の時が見やすいでしょう。出現時は非常に低空なので、観察には見晴らしの良い場所が必要です。
11日から13日頃を中心に、ペルセウス座流星群が見頃です。12日深夜から13日未明にかけて、特に多くの流星が現れ、今年は月明かりの影響もない好条件で見られそうです。
未明の東の空で、火星と木星が並んでいます。日毎に2つの惑星の位置関係が変化し、15日には、月の視直径と同程度の離角で並んで見えます。低倍率にした望遠鏡で同じ視野に見えるほどの接近です。
